OK, Obama's going to tighten the screws on the kids.
The White House on Monday warned it may have to cancel the 135th annual Easter Egg Roll due to financial uncertainty, including a âpotential government shutdown.â
The Easter Egg Roll is the latest so-called victim of the nationâs financial troubles. The Obama administration has been heavily criticized over its recent decision to cancel all White House tours, citing the mandatory cuts known as sequestration.
Republicans began complaining about the following official White House memo on Monday, which warns of the potential shutdown of the yearly event scheduled for April 1:
âFinally, by using these tickets, guests are acknowledging that this event is subject to cancellation due to funding uncertainty surrounding the Executive Office of the President and other federal agenciesâ¦If cancelled, the event will not be re-scheduled. We will notify you if there are any modifications to this event.â
More from the Washington Post:
House and Senate members received the memo last week, along with the notice that each congressional family would receive a total of five tickets; Politico first reported news of it Monday.
Former House speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) was quick to attack the Obama administration over the issue, tweeting: âShameless! How else can you describe the threat to cancel white house Easter egg hunt? Maybe pathetic, demagogic? You try to find right words.â
A White House official confirmed to the Post that the warning did indeed go out to all ticket-holders.
âBecause we distribute tickets to the Easter Egg Roll far in advance, we alerted all ticket holders that this event is subject to cancellation due to funding uncertainty, including the possibility of a government shutdownâ¦However, we are currently proceeding as planned with the Easter Egg Roll,â the official wrote in an email.
