Unfortunately for the Democrats, voter turn out in a mid term election rarely exceed 40% while it is generally about 50% in a presidential election. The opposition party usually gains in the US mid term election. By that analysis, if voting were mandatory in the US, the Democrats could win in this election. However, if voting were made mandatory, I am sure there were be some uproar in the Tea party about their "freedom" being taken away.
 
You are looking at the wrong ends. One is taken facing the capitol building, the other, the Lincoln memorial.

Thus far, the big question following yesterday’s event appears to be how many people attended. Answer from the ground: a lot. Interestingly CBS is estimating the crowd at 87,000. NBC quoted the National Parks service which put it at 300,000. Based solely on my perspective from the ground and the fact I was in Washington for the Inauguration I would err on the side of NBC and the National Parks. But the discrepancy begs the question: how do you lose 200,000 people?

Of course there were more at the stewart rally than the Beck rally. The Beck Rally was 2 months ago. In sept, about 95k jobs were lost so there were more people with free time to go to the Stewart rally.

Also lets not forget that half those numbers belong to colbert too.
