New turn of events. Germany is trying to push EU into banning federal funding for stem cells.

There is no way for me to describe my contempt for this nonsense. Medical research is at the top of the list in terms of logical uses for federal funding, along with crime prevention. If a particular type of medical research shows huge potential, it should receive more funding.Quote from pattersb:
If there truly is potential for miracle cures, then funding should not be an issue and federal funding should not be required.
There is no way for me to describe...Quote from pattersb:
Like abortion, these advances in medicine will likely devalue our humanity further.
The rush to strip out imperfections? What are you talking about? Now I am starting to think that you are sympathetic with these people who refuse medical assistance for their children on the grounds that the condition is God's will and that if God wants the child to live, the child will live. I believe you are one of these people with all my heart. Again, I reserve my greatest contempt for selfish, weak-minded people who would put their own complacency above the needs of others. When a young man or woman gets into a motorbike accident and injures the spinal column, is the desire to treat that person part of 'the rush to strip out imperfections'?Quote from pattersb:
In a rush to strip out all imperfections, the essence of what it means to be human will likely go with it.

Ok, I'll admit. I don't have much to add to this debate, (certainly no expertise in genetic engineering). All I can say is if recoiling at the thought of anything resembling manufacturing human life for our consumption makes one a regressive, right-wing, wingnut, I'll wear the label proudly.
In fifty years when there is large scale manufacturing of embryos for such things as cosmetics and other important medical uses, you won't have the right to blame.

Well, lucky for you, here I am to explain things:
In a democratic country (I mean in a REALLY democratic country) the Prez or the Senators/Congressmen do whatever the people want them to do.
Like in Spain. If Spanish people want their troops out of Iraq, the government better withdraw them, otherwise they get kicked out of power. As they were....
Thus if 75% of Americans want stem cell research, the Prez better listen, supposed he does what his constituents want him to do. That is called representative democracy. (of course it is not the case here if anybody noticed yet)
Now, I am not saying the people are always right (there is no such a thing as universal right, by the way) but if they fuck up, they can only blame themselves.
Democracy usually means, the rule of the majority...(and not the chosen ones or powerful ones)

Do you think you may be over reacting just a little bit?
Do you use indoor plumbing?
Do you use any invention of man?
Do you go to the doctor?
Or do you just pray: "God help me" when you are sick or need something?

Man I bet you could make a fortune setting up a little stem cell factory in the Dominican Republic!
