Statistics class today : Am I correct or is my teacher?

For those reading this thread, don't always think that the person on the other side of your trade is a genius. I hope you trade futures, so I can take some of your money like I did to the others who bet against me today.

"Not surprisingly, marijuana intoxication can cause distorted perceptions, impaired coordination, difficulty with thinking and problem solving, and problems with learning and memory. Research has shown that, in chronic users, marijuana's adverse impact on learning and memory can last for days or weeks after the acute effects of the drug wear off.2 As a result, someone who smokes marijuana every day may be functioning at a suboptimal intellectual level all of the time."

Of course the government has always been completely honest about marijuana and has never put out full-blown lies about its use.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaGuardia_Commission

"The La Guardia Committee was the first in depth study into the effects of smoking marijuana. It systematically contradicted claims made by the U.S. Treasury Department that smoking marijuana results in insanity, deteriorates physical and mental health, assists in criminal behavior and juvenile delinquency, is physically addictive, and is a "gateway" drug to more dangerous drugs.

The report was prepared by the New York Academy of Medicine, on behalf of a commission appointed in 1939 by New York Mayor Fiorello La Guardia who was a strong opponent of the 1937 Marijuana Tax Act . Released in 1944, the report infuriated Harry Anslinger who was campaigning against marijuana and he condemned it as unscientific. [1] Anslinger went on an offensive against what he saw as a "degenerate Hollywood" that was promoting marijuana use.

After high profile arrests of actors like Robert Mitchum, Hollywood gave Anslinger full control over the script of any film that mentioned marijuana."

Everyone has tried weed. However, most people are smart enough to not abuse it. Seek professional help like rehab, or be like Amy Winehouse who said to no to rehab and died young.

Also, maybe you should not post about all your illegal drug taking. Don't you think the cops can't find you in Parrish, Florida? Or is the weed not making you paranoid?

I guess if the police feel so compelled.

Everyone has tried weed? Doubtful.

I am sure you are a great guy and all but seriously.. Abusing weed? Is that even possible? Well, maybe according to drugabuse.GOV it is. That link still has me laughing a bit, no offense.

I guess I should work on my paranoia levels.

Good talk, Russ.

I don't care how much weed you smoke. Weed is not what caused Amy Winehouse to die.

If the purpose was to estimate the % blue and white crystals in the total population from the samples, you can play with these calculators to see how accuracy increases as sample sizes get larger.

Quote from Algo_Design_Kid:

Unless I got way too high in the parking lot before class I do not see how this makes any sense. Here is how it went down.

She takes a small box of blue and white crystals, they were split evenly. She shook them up etc.

So she hands 5 people a "random" ( even though it wasn't ) sample of crystals. There was a total of about 50.

Here is a close example of how it turned out.

Person 1 - 9 Total - 3 Blue

Person 2 - 10 Total - 0 Blue

Person 3 - 5 Total - 2 Blue

Person 4 - 2 Total - 1 Blue

Person 5 - 3 Total - 3 Blue

Anyway, she is going over what type(s) of bias were present. Some person raises their hand and says it is biased because some people GOT MORE than the other when she was handing them out.

I thought in my mind immediately that was strange. The teacher was like yepp.. then went on.. I didnt say anything.

So when she was done talking I raised my hand and asked why would it matter the amount each person got as long as you handed out the same amount of crystals and hypothetically it really was random?

She was like, you will learn why in chapter 5 and hurried along. I was going to say "Are you sure about that?" - but didn't - just because I could have really been too high at the time, but on the other hand it obviously wasn't worth it.

So really the question is, or better put my point, is that it shouldn't matter who got what because in the end the fractions should total up to the same amount from the total sample.

Did I fail here big time ( wouldn't surprise me ) or is my teacher really that dumb? State school of course.
