2005-09-19, Monday - Update

I sold all shares of ELOS at 10:24 AM when price closed below the 20 day moving average receiving a fill price of $38.55. This two day trade yielded a gross profit of $350 USD or a 1% gain on 1000 shares.

I sold all shares of IRIS at 1:04 PM when price closed below the 20 day moving average receiving a fill price of $18.40. This two day trade yielded a gross profit of $230 USD or a 1.2% gain on 1000 shares.

I have attached an updated Results File / Equity Curve.

Don't quite recall when 20 day moving average exit strategy was implemented. I've read the complete journal and don't recall.

I sold elos beginning of session based on previous day peak volume fill $38.81.

Iris I sold based on 4% trailing stop from high of previous day.
Supposed to be 5% but I've found 4% seems to work better.

When did you implement the 20 day moving average strategy? And does it replace the trailing stop strategy?

Also, I see on a daily chart ELOS 20 day moving average would be $37.24, but on the 30min intraday chart, it's 38.64.

It appears you mean the 20 period MA on 30min charts.

one more thing. Is it simple MA?

I appreciate your patience.

Thanks

Yes. Sorry, I did mean the 20 period SMA. As to why I exited the trades at this point, several factors influenced the decision. A declining overall market combined with rapidly declining price for the equities I held caused me to think, perhaps, the trend had changed. Since many people often use the 20 SMA as an area for support / resistance, I waited to see if price would break through this price-point. When price closed below this level, I believed it was time for me to exit. More importantly, I knew the FOMC had scheduled an announcement for tomorrow. As such, I anticipated a decreased likelihood of a turnaround in the trend before tomorrow's announcement. As a result, I exited (probably much later than I should have). Congrats to you on your profitable trade.

Final Universe - Update

I plan to add CTHR & RATE to the Final Universe List after the close on Monday.

Hi Spyder,

Can you let us know what criteria you used to produce the above 2 additions to the final universe? They are not even in the list from stocktable.com (using 90 RS and 80 EPS). Thanks as always.

Prior to the addition of the two equities in question, The Final Universe contained 25 stocks. However, five of those 25 failed to achieve a rank. This left 20 equities for the system to evaluate on a daily basis. The system works best when greater than 20 equities reside in the Final Universe List. In an effort to increase the number of equities, I searched for additional stocks which cycled a minimum of five times in six months, and which also, met the criteria for Average Daily Volume, Positive EPS & Float. Only RATE & CTHR passed the test. As a result, I added them to the Final Universe List even though they did not meet the RS and EPS percentile criteria. I could have just as easily altered another threshold criteria (raise or lower price) in an effort to increase the potential for a stock to make the list. My reasoning behind using these two equities is that out of all equities traded on the AMEX, NYSE or NASDAQ exchanges, only these two equities passed the test.

Hope that helps.
