Yikes, did y'all check out the volume on GROW today? It's at 1700% over average volume before mid-day!
SAN ANTONIO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 8, 2006--U.S. Global Investors, Inc. (NASDAQ:GROW - News), a boutique registered investment advisory firm, today reported that its fiscal year 2006 revenue rose 164 percent and its earnings grew more than sevenfold compared to the previous fiscal year.

I checked zacks and earnings.com and neither of them show GROW reporting earnings today, just list the date as NA.

Scary.

IIG is moving on high volume too (also reported earnings yesterday), but not quite as high. With gaps like both of these have seen, they're probably attracting a lot of daytraders.

While watching GROW trade pre-market, I noticed it already had some 200,000 shares traded before the opening bell. Currently trading at 16 or 17 times the daily average volume, look for this large influx of new traders to 'skew' the volume charts for a while.

Hey Todd,

I hope you enjoyed your trip. Its nice of you to go show your trading prowess to the wannabees(me included):D

I recently have been observing/trading small shares of the unusual volume breakouts. I was wondering if you know how come we use 65 day avg volume as opposed to something related to the natural cycle or is 65 chosen due to software constraints. Maybe 16 days might be something worth trying, which would be 2 times the half cycle of 6-8 days?

Just wondering..TIA

I definitely enjoyed the trip to the New York area, and highly recommend a visit to the Hudson River Valley District. I had the distinct pleasure of meeting some truly delightful and generous people, and appreicate their hospitality. In addition to the indigenous New York crowd, cousin Shamus (and his friend Patty O'firnitur), straight from Ireland, attended. A Canada Goose and a Chinese bus driver (neither post on ET) rounded out the International Flavor of the event. Unfortunately, time constraints limited the number of people with whom I could visit, but I plan on another trip it the not too distant future to catch up with those unavailable this go round.

We use the 65-day average volume because of the way QCharts supplies the data - their default for Unusual Volume. However, one could create a proprietary indicator using (as you suggest) a shorter cycle period. Simply, take the current volume (up to the tick) and divide by the average volume over the last 'x' days. A good idea I think.

Let us know how it turns out if you choose to investigate it further.
