I LOVED Coles....but look at some of the names and #'s and tell me the Skins didn't grossly over pay???

Despite his occasional brashness, Randy Moss is such an unstoppable force...wherever he is on the field, at all times you have to put a safety and a corner on him....and he still makes the catches....I like Harrison but i think he catches too many short passes and not the gam beakers like the others..I can;t wait for football

Being in San Diego now, it will be interesting to see if can tow the line.
They paid up for him, no question. Their gamble is they think they are getting one of the best young receivers in the league, just as he enters the sweet spot of his career. I think you have to look at it from their standpoint, before you say they made a mistake. They basically had three number two receivers last year. Rod Gardner is ok but inconsistent and not a burner. So their number one priority was to get someone opposite him. They justify the Coles deal by saying they would have had to pay that much for a receiver drafted in the first round, with no assurances he would be a star. The other options in free agency were Boston, who was coming off an injury and had off field issues, Price, who was more of a number two receiver, and Dyson, who was not in the same class and is already out for the year with an injury. They tried to get the Rocket but he wasn't interested. So from their standpoint, yes it was a lot of money but it made sense when you look at the alternatives. And remember, their quarterback has a relatively small salary.
I don't understand your point about the Jets tender would have paid Coles too much. As I recall it was 1.8 mill for one year. They tendered him for 1.4 and were resigned to having to pay a lot more.
Under owner Daniel Snyder the Redskins seem determined to be the ultimate high risk, high reward team, on the field and in the front office. When the alternative is the slow motion incompetency of the Wizards ownership, at least it's entertaining.
