If the media could be trusted to research and vet sources, then you could use an anonymous source to say things like that. But the past has shown that the media doesn't check sources and will print anything, so long as it is Orange Man Bad. That's the problem with crying wolf all the time. Even if you eventually get one right and the wolf is coming, no one believes you anymore.
Have you ever heard about the confrontation clause? It is a US thing. The “Whistleblower”, one would think, would be a significant witness in the impeachment proceedings.
