Southern anger: Nazis, KKK 'hijacking' Confederate debate

White Southerners who equate Old South symbols with regional pride rather than hate are even more on the defensive since neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klansmen and other extremists became the face of the fight over Confederate monuments.

With more than two dozen relatives who fought for the Confederacy, Robert Castello literally wears his Southern pride. The visor, suspenders and ring he donned Thursday were all emblazoned with the familiar design of the rebel battle flag.

But Castello, whose Dixie General Store sells Confederate-themed hats, shirts, stickers and signs in rural eastern Alabama, said he doesn't have any use for overtly racist groups like the Klan.

"When I was growing up it was like a badge of honor to be proud of your Southern heritage. It was taught and it was part of who you were," said Castello, 58. "To see it denigrated down to the point of Nazis is disgusting."

A leading Southern heritage organization, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, had no official involvement in the bloody protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, and its leader condemned the white supremacists who rallied for preserving a statute of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

"It's painful to watch, for lack of better words," said Thomas V. Strain Jr., the group's commander. "It was our family that fought, and it was our families that died, and now we have these knuckleheads hijacking the flag for their own purposes."

The New Civil War
By Tom Trinko
"The first “shots” in our new civil war were fired after Charlottesville when many Democratic leaders claimed that they had the right to use physical force against anyone they didn’t like.

While cowardly leftist leaders are trying to portray themselves as fighting Hitler they are really fighting anyone they don’t agree with. Remember that some Democrats said that Rep. Steve Scalise had it coming since he opposed gun control and that Democrats have been silent when left-wing violence was used to prevent Republicans marching in a parade in Portland.

Facing a continued loss of power because their radical agenda is toxic to most Americans, the Democrat leadership -- which includes the MSM -- have decided that they have the right to physically attack anyone who stands in their way.

Like their Nazi and Communist forefathers, today’s Democrat leaders are comfortable sending swarms of Brownshirts out to beat into submission anyone who stands between them and power.

Under Obama, Democrats renounced the rule of law by declaring that they could choose to not enforce laws they didn’t like and make up laws that Congress never passed. Now they’re saying that they have the right to attack anyone who dares speak out in disagreement. "

"The time for pretending that Democrat leadership is patriotic is over. It’s time to shout from the rooftops that the Democratic leadership is a fascist cabal intent on overthrowing democracy."

"The Democratic leadership is now following Mao, who said that political power grows from the barrel of a gun, while Americans are being forced to defend the core American belief that power flows from the people.....

Today Democrats have crossed the Rubicon. By saying that it’s okay for Antifa to shut down speakers they don’t like and physically assault anyone they don’t happen to agree with Democrats have renounced the rule of law and summoned the whirlwind of civil war."

Those Southern pride folks really should contain those radical elements - otherwise everyone might assume they are all terrorists.

There is actually a lot of debate among the new right about this. Many see demonstrations like Charlottesville as so stupid that they reek of government or leftwing backing. Lure the dumbasses out into a preplanned ambush, blame them for the violence, then go ape shit on Trump when he declines to ditch his entire new right base.

Let's be honest too. The thing that set off the CEO's,etc was the anti-jew chants a few of the dumber demonstrators pulled. Trump should have specifically renounced that, while defending the right to protest removal of statues.

This is the problem with a candidate and president who seemingly cannot string coherent thoughts together in oral sentences. Worse, he seems to imagine himself to be highly persuasive and eloquent.

I will admit I was a little taken aback by the list of groups sponsoring the Unite the Right rally. They have a right to demonstrate without being attacked but I don't think serious people would want to be part of their rallies. On the other hand, these groups are far less dangerous and toxic than soros groups like BLM. It's almost like the media and establishment are hypocritical or something.

As noted the in the article at the very bottom, and some of the quotes from it below. Most of the work regarding Southern heritage is driven by the United Daughters of the Confederacy / Sons of the Confederacy Veterans organizations. The organizations have been very vocal in opposing white supremacist and hate groups which detract from the work these organizations are trying to do. The UDC and SCB oppose any violence and do not join in demonstrations organized by the alt-right groups, they merely want to use the proper government channels to preserve civil war monuments. Some quotes below...

------------

'You're not likely to see most SCV members on the news protesting to preserve Confederate monuments. The group focuses on working behind the scenes -- filing lawsuits, raising money and persuading private landowners to host their monuments. Virginia division leaders warned members not to show up in Charlottesville.

"We are reasonable people that believe in the Constitution and the rule of law," said B. Frank Earnest, spokesman for the Virginia division. "When the SCV has issues with a locality or the state we go to city council meetings. We go to seminars and, if necessary, we take the city to court. That's how we deal."'

------------

'As protests around contested Confederate monuments become more heated, the SCV has taken great pains to distance itself from the white nationalist movement. It points to the SCV constitution, revised in 2016, which says the group "neither embraces, nor espouses acts or ideologies of racial and religious bigotry, and further, condemns the misuse of its sacred symbols and flags in the conduct of same."'

-----------

'The Sons of Confederate Veterans have been trying for some time to distance themselves from hate groups. They passed a "hate resolution" in 1989'

-----------

'After Charlottesville, members including Culpepper blame white nationalists for unraveling their legacy, and confusing their message of honoring their forebears.

"I hate all of them because they took my ancestors' flag of honor and destroyed it," Culpepper said of the KKK, neo-Nazis and the League of the South. "They've done more damage to Southern heritage than anybody has."

But, he's just as upset at those tearing down monuments across the country and vandalizing them.

"You're stomping on a statue that represents a citizen of North Carolina who was called up to defend his state against an invading army."'

Here's an example of an orgainization on the Southern Poverty Law Center's hate list.

American Family Association
Initially founded as the National Federation for Decency, the American Family Association (AFA) originally focused on what it considered indecent television programming and pornography. The AFA says it promotes "traditional moral values" in media. A large part of that work involves "combating the...
