That sounds like a hardware failure. IRQ failures are much more rare these days (if you are running WinXP/98/2k), but you can check them.
If you are running XP wait until the failure occurs, then go to your control panel, and select System. Select the hardware tab, then Device Manager. Find your device (prolly under Sound), and open it up - Windows has a status that will have a small chance of giving you some additional info.
sound card will work fine for you. Expect to pay about $15 bucks for one. After you have disabled your on-board sound, plug the new sound card into your mainboard and fire it up. Windows will either ask you for the drivers, or more likely just ask for the W2K install CD.
