Some Things I Learned About Automated Trading Systems From Writing a Poker Bot

Quote from ElCubano:

how about using 2-3 BOTS in a 5 handed 1/2 room??

That is commonly referred to as collusion, and is probably the thing good online poker players fear most from bots. It is a form of cheating. Online sites can and do shut down players who play together too often - it's pretty easy for the sites to detect if you do it often or if you're using the same IP #s.

somewhat off the topic: are there any legal issues with running a bot at online poker sites???

just curious?

Online sites can and have frozen player accounts who they suspect are running bots. That was one of the reasons I decided to call it quits. It also was not as profitable as I had hoped. Because my bot didn't read other players' actions it was at a disadvantage. I started "helping" it out when it was making clearly foolish plays against certain players (overbetting, folding too easily, not folding quick enough). In the end I was helping my bot to such an extent that it was as if I were just there multitabling by myself. Besides the whole point of this exercise was to observe the bots and learn from them rather than me playing. I got tired of the late nights and all the rest and decided to end the experiment while I was ahead.
