Cruelty towards patients became ‘normal’ in the NHS without anyone noticing, according to Jeremy Hunt.

Poor levels of treatment described by staff would not be tolerated in future, the health secretary said.

Mr Hunt outlined reforms to health care as he told MPs the service could no longer attempt to cover up its mistakes.

Mr Hunt’s comments came in his response to a report by Robert Francis which found shocking levels of care at Stafford Hospital.

‘One of the most chilling accounts of the report came from Mid Staffs employees, who considered the care they saw as being normal,’ he said.
