The House Republicans' first major technology initiative is about to be unveiled: a push to force Internet companies to keep track of what their users are doing.

A House panel chaired by Rep. F. James Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin is scheduled to hold a hearing tomorrow morning to discuss forcing Internet providers, and perhaps Web companies as well, to store records of their users' activities for later review by police.

All ISP's and hosting companies log and track users. These laws just provide a legal means for the authorities to gain access to the data. As of now they have to serve a subpoena which can be challenged by the ISP and notification to the end user whose info is being requested. The Feds are ultimately after immediate real time access to user data without notification. ie. An admin type login to all ISP's.

I couldn't help but notice you left out the fact that Barry and what was a democratically controlled House and Senate had two full years to reduce or even reverse this stuff. Since the democrats did nothing of the sort, except maybe make it worse, I have to assume both Barry and the dems WANT all this surveillance. These records are like stats and can be manipulated for whatever purpose. ie. Julius Assange accessed the Pentagon network from IP address xxx.xxx.xxx on 2/1/2010 at 12:32:01 GST illegally accessing the file secrets.pdf. Whether the allegation is true or false is irrelevant, Assange can now be extradited on a fabricated record and has to prove his innocence.

Just resign yourself to the fact that anything you do online can be tracked and act accordingly.
