So why Tesla didn't pick Poland for their European factory?

So a factory opening needs a permit first. Who knew?

Since beginning work on the sprawling plant in early 2020, Tesla has faced setback after setback over issues like environmental impact and permitting. It all means that Tesla is way behind schedule in opening up the factory, the cornerstone of its European strategy where it plans to churn out half a million cars annually.

Elon Musk vs. German bureaucracy
Tesla has hit one bureaucratic slowdown after another since it broke ground in the small town of Grünheide, near Berlin.

In December, Tesla was forced to temporarily stop constructing parts of the plant after it failed to pay a €100 million deposit on time. In June, it had to resubmit permit applications to account for a battery-production facility. The public now has until August 16 to review the documents and file any objections, according to the Brandenburg State Office for the Environment.

This whole time, Tesla has been building the factory under a series of provisional permits - at its own financial risk - as it waits for full approval from the environmental authority in Brandenburg. Theoretically, it would have to dismantle the plant if the project isn't given the green light, and it's unclear when Tesla will get full authorisation.

Tesla has gotten fed up with the delays. In April, the company sent a letter to the Brandenburg state government complaining about the "irritating" approval process that had begun 16 months earlier, Bloomberg reported.

TSLA has the opportunity to poach engineering talent in Germany with its inflated stock as currency. Also, Germany has a superior access to the supply chain.

However, The Volkswagen ID3 market just needs to be protected for a little while longer.

I don't know anyone who drives through or lives in rodent prone areas. What rodents?
Noooo.... no no no.

.... Piezoe is 1000% right. Friggin mice will chew those wires.
I don't care where you live... there are mice.
I won't put out poison to kill mice. I think its cruel, even if they are just mice. But that's just me.

That said however... I can tell you un-f'ing-equivocally.... you can have a garage as pristine as you'd see on season 3 of NASCAR Scientists.... and you park an old Audi, VW, or Porsche in there.... and let it sit.... those little f'rs will find those wires. They'll gnaw them bare.

Poison sucks though.
Get a barn cat. Its quicker and more humane.
Plus it gives a stupid f'n cat a reason to exist.

The Polish border is like 100Km away. They could have used Polish sla... I mean workers with German engineers. They could have built a small hotel, the engineers stay there during the week, go home for the weekend.

They don't even have real permits for the factory and there is a non-zero chance that they will never get it. Temporary permits have the risk of losing capital (and time) when the whole thing stops due to lack of permits.

Why not get a Spotted Owl? They eat mice, are less maintenance than cats, and we will save the fucking spotted owl by feeding them. By saving the spotted owl, we can keep burning NG, oil and coal. It is what makes our society work.

Musk is trying to use his stock as currency for the new hires by offering 20% in equity compensation. "Disruptor" or hubris? It will be interesting to see if Germans take stock instead of Union protections.

As someone on ET once explained to me, Germany doesn't have a big equity market culture.

Despite being a Tesla bull, I've not been a proponent of a factory in Germany and have already posted why.
What concerns me next, that is, once they get their permit to start work, is that the all mighty IG Metall union will have moles employed there whose job will be to sabotage production with a mix of complaints about anything they can come up with that would send inspections and halt work, all the way to actual sabotage.
While I find union bullying repulsive, I primarily hold Musk responsible for his decision to set up shop in Germany, decision driven by ego more than sound judgment.

Elon knows what he's doing.
He's way ahead of the game.
Hard to see atm. but it'll play out well.
He could have chosen anywhere.
Stay the course, you'll be fine.
