A Southern California district attorney running for re-election is aiming to portray his opponent as a clone of George Gascón, the top prosecutor in neighboring Los Angeles County who is facing a recall attempt and backlash from elected officials and crime victims over his prosecutorial directives that critics say has contributed to a rise in crime.
In a campaign video released Thursday, Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer paints Los Angeles as a dirty, crime-ridden city besieged by homelessness while criticizing defense attorney Pete Hardin as being soft on criminals.
"He's already announced exactly the same lines as George Gascón," Spitzer is heard saying in the 2-minute video titled "Gotham." "No bail. No death penalty. No (sentencing) enhancements."

Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg lowers charges in grand larceny case: sources
Claude Myers, 54, had 46 prior arrests on his rap sheet and was on parole when he was caught by the NYPD Thursday, sources said.
“Next time I won’t do it right in front of you,” Myers told the arresting officers, according to a source.
Myers was initially facing several charges, including grand larceny — for removing the property from a person — but the DA’s office downgraded the case to simple petty larceny, the sources said.

The NYPD however still gives tickets for the violation on subways — some 14,573 in the fourth quarter of 2021 — and occasionally makes arrests. Bus enforcement, however, is non-existent; the Transit Bureau did not issue a single bus fare evasion summons in all of 2021, according to publicly available stats.

But when prosecutors wrote up the complaint against Myers, the top charge was downgraded from felony grand larceny to petit larceny, court records show. Judge Michael Gaffey ordered Myers released without bail.
