Smithfield Foods to close Sioux Falls plant indefinitely amid COVID-19

We got a 6 month stockpile of raw ingredients. Flour, Rice, seeds and beans etc. To make Indian dishes.

Might have to make do without Steaks, Beer and Coca Cola.

Veggie food + water for six months if needed. Will probably do me good. Add a couple of years onto my life.

I can live on very basic food. Simplest dishes of only a few ingredients is all I need. Now talk to those who need 5 square meals a day and the millenials who need their specialized foods. They are the ones bitching...haaaaaa.

the higher the food shortage and the longer the lines at the food banks the higher equities go...seems absolutely nothing bothers the markets especially last weeks 12% gains which was the highest in nearly 50 years!!!!!!!

Patience.

They say there was a big rally on the Moscow Stock Exchange the day Bolsheviks stormed in and shot everyone.

Side note for those not aware Smithfield (the largest pig and pork processing company in the world) a company integral to Chumpie's claim of China making yuuuuge purchases

And the second para of the wiki page...

Trump wasn't in office in 2013... so much for your "integral" claim.

"Then known as Shuanghui Group, WH Group purchased Smithfield Foods in 2013 for $4.72 billion, more than its market value.[9][10] It was the largest Chinese acquisition of an American company to date.[11] The acquisition of Smithfield's 146,000 acres of land made WH Group, headquartered in Luohe, Henan province, one of the largest overseas owners of American farmland."

The point is not when they were purchased. The point is Chumpie exclaiming how he got such a great deal from the Chinese to buy American!! American stuff from a Chinese owned company.

I hope you didn't think that I have a problem with the Chinese owning Smithfield. I do not. What I was pointing was as always with Chumpie don't look behind the curtain Trumpuppets.

But I have no doubt Trumpuppets have a problem, if only they knew, that Smithfield is Chinese owned.

As for integral I meant a big part of buy American in that deal is .... pork. From guess who?

...I've noticed the grocery stores not that crowded but in many stores the shelves only 2/3's full. Means there's supply issues hitting. Noticed the meat at costco only about 1/2 full

hafez50,

In what city / country you're in that you're noticing this or you're talking about something you've read about ?

The point is that YOU attempted to play identity politics with a single plant closing, through incomplete facts concerning the parent company.

Look a little deeper... From Smithfield web site...

"Headquartered in the United States for more than 80 years, our business operations include the following:
  • Packaged Meats;
  • Fresh Pork;
  • Hog Production; and
  • International.
The International segment is comprised mainly of wholly owned and joint venture operations in Poland, Romania, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.

Our products are sold to more than 5,700 customers in 43 countries on every continent (except Antarctica), including supermarket and hotel chains, wholesale distributors, restaurants, hospitals, and other institutions. We also sell to companies that further process our meats into consumer food products.

Smithfield is a wholly owned subsidiary of Hong Kong-based WH Group Limited, a publicly traded company with shareholders around the world. For more information on WH Group and its operations visit http://www.wh-group.com/"

Code:
Companywide Snapshot 2018 2017 2016
Employees 54,533 52,238 50,702

I'll go out on a limb and suggest the company produces W-2 jobs in the US.
Also out a limb, I'll suggest the deal with China (note WH Group is Hong-Kong based) increases the amount of product China will buy in relation to previous trade deals, and will increase the revenue generated by operations in the US which is potentially taxable, in addition to the balance of trade.

Stop the identity politics.

Atlanta . I'm not talking empty shelves but i'm noticing many shelves that had 20 items might have 3 or 4 items . Soups, canned foods etc. Now costco except for meat was stocked. I'm saying with some plants closing so who knows what the future brings . But don't worry stocks love starvation . lol

The point is
Ridiculous.

I put my 2 cents in that the company in the news story is also the main company in Chumpie's buy American touting. A Chinese owned company. They are buying from themselves.

Too bad if you don't like me pointing it out.

I'm here in Québec City and I recently notice many shelves are well stocked while some shelves or meats are very limited, stores saying only 2 items per customer and such like that.

Well, I'm good friends with the store manager (his son plays on my son's hockey team)...so I gave him a call on Thursday about what I saw at several different grocery store.

He stated its not a problem with the delivery trucks but a problem with processing plants that have either been hit with Covid-19 or protests by employees about working conditions (e.g. working shoulder to shoulder, no medical masks, no medical gloves)...

Foods coming from those particular plants are temporary disrupted especially when an employee becomes Covid-19 positive. They have to temporary (several days to a week) shut down until the plant has been disinfected from a special 3rd party cleaning crew contracted with the health officials. During such, its difficult to then get another supplier for those items.

For example, fresh vegetables are well stocked but about 1/3 of the frozen vegetables (many coming from California) are empty sections in the cold section. 1/2 the milk section is empty while bottle cold juices (e.g. fresh orange juice) are well stocked.

He also mention a lot of delivery trucks travel up thru Montreal area and its the location of a few processing plants. In contrast, a lot of the fresh foods come from the West and North while poultry comes from the East.

Further, I've notice different delivery trucks (smaller) than normal travelling into the city as if they are "replacements".

This is a little concerning because one of the keys to riots and looting is food shortages.

Jesse Livermore, in his depression era book, retold the story of The penniless tramp.

His hunger gave him the audacity to enter a restaurant and order "a big, luscious, thick, juicy steak" and, he added to the coloured waiter "tell your boss to make it snappy". In a moment the waiter ambled back and whined "De boss say if he had dat steak here he'd eat it hisself"

Enjoy any luscious steaks while you can, things could get lean for a while.
