Six-Figure Federal Salary Gravy Train

Quote from 377OHMS:

I'm one of them.

I mean, the whole country seems to regard conservative white middle-aged men who earn upper-middle-class wages as the enemy. We have a target painted on our asses (and our checkbooks).

Why not take a couple of hundred k per year in federal salary to pay all those extra taxes and fees the democrats are instituting? They pay my salary and I give them part of the money back in the form of taxs and fees. In return they get a good 10-minutes per week solid engineering work.

The medical benefits are quite good. I'm staying on federal salary (augmented with a grant, more free money!) until the idiots are thrown out of office at which time I will return to industry.

I did nearly the same thing during Clinton. Had a nice DoD grant and research salary while attending engineering school.

When the government fucks me I try to hit them back. If you voted for Obama I want to thank you for paying my salary.

The federal govt. paid off the student loans I incurred during school. If I recall correctly I originally used my student loan to buy a vintage car that raced in Lemans. All perfectly legal.

I know some of you guys are working similar deals. Federal jobs have sabbaticals and I take a year off to work at a hedge fund or other financial work occasionally. Its like holding that federal job in reserve but making real money in a real job at the same time. I spent the last sabbatical on Dearborn St. working for that convertible bond trader dude. Man, what a tool.

There is another option which is the feds will pay me my salary plus tuition, transportation costs and a nice stipend to attend post-graduate school for 2-years. You don't have to actually come to work at all during the 2-years. I think they require a 2-year commitment when you return from school (if you leave you must pay back the tuition).

Think of it like your main trading nut. When there is good volatility you put your money up and trade. When the market is flat and risk/reward is unfavorable you pull your money back into something safe (simple interest if you are a piker.. like me). Ducking into a federal job for awhile is something like that.

Besides, I did my small part in helping to kill bad guys and that offers some satisfaction of the variety that is hard to come by in finance.

Of course, some will point out that if I was trading successfully why on earth would I need a salary? Valid question. I'm mostly all-in on a house.

The friggin Money Pit. :D

Anyway, I know you guys are going to hate on federal employees but you must admit that it is just people taking advantage of the current adminstration to make a few bucks. It won't last, nothing does.

Ever hear of the economic multiplier effect?

I know that you sit around and chew on your money, but most people spend it. One persons payment is another person's taxable salary, so it is NOT a zero sum game. At this salary level the mulitplier effect is less than if the money is invested lower on the income scale, or say, in NASA, but as an exercise you should look up how much the government gets back in taxes for every dollar invested in each program. Since you consider offhand all government spending as an expense rather than an investment, I suggest that you do not use an exchange, roads, airports, internet, any drug originated with funds from an NIH grant, any doctor who's school is subsidized by the NIH, or any item developed from research done by NASA, DARPA, or the DOE, or buy any item shipped here over sea lanes kept safe by the Navy's efforts for a week. Then tell me that all government spending is wasteful and nonproductive.

As for the facts of salary increase stated here, I am not sure that they are facts, but I'll see. I do know that the outsourcing of government functions has been a patronage crony reward scheme. The Army is more cost efficient and better able to feed and do its own laundry than KBR for instance, and the Navy does its own overhauls more cost effectively than Northrop. Thank Reagen and Bush 1 for starting it and Clinton and now Obama for continuing,( if he is) for the contracting out where we get half the increase in the common good for twice the price.

Anybody for the ....IMMEDIATE AND NECESSARY

DOWNSIZING OF GOVT. ??????

The number of federal workers earning six-figure salaries has exploded during the recession, according to a USA TODAY analysis of federal salary data.

Federal employees making salaries of $100,000 or more jumped from 14% to 19% of civil servants during the recession's first 18 months — and that's before overtime pay and bonuses are counted.

Federal workers are enjoying an extraordinary boom time — in pay and hiring — during a recession that has cost 7.3 million jobs in the private sector.

Defense Department civilian employees earning $150,000 or more increased from 1,868 in December 2007 to 10,100 in June 2009, the most recent figure available.

When the recession started, the Transportation Department had only one person earning a salary of $170,000 or more. Eighteen months later, 1,690 employees had salaries above $170,000.

The growth in six-figure salaries has pushed the average federal worker's pay to $71,206, compared with $40,331 in the private sector.

The government is ABUSING their power to set pay scales and number of employees.

Without MAJOR OVERHAUL AND A HUGE SCALING BACK OF GOVERNMENT, AMERICA WILL FAIL FINANCIALLY BECAUSE OF IT!

Do you think it's possible that Obama and the Progressives WANT THIS? THAT IT'S PART OF THEIR AGENDA?

If one considers the facts, such a thing cannot be ruled out.

And.. he DID promise to "transform America", did he not?

While there is some justification for the government getting involved in large scale projects, like highways and power plants, most of the time government grants and subsidies will just create a vicious cycle, and negatively affect private businesses and economy in general. I suggest you read Milton Friedman, Capitalism and Freedom, or Henry Hazlitt, Economics in One Lesson. Both of them an eye opener.

All good arguments in this post. But nobody has made the gov't efficiency argument yet. For example, around 70% of gov't defense contracts are over budget and behind schedule. So extra spending on those projects is not resulting in extra efficiency. I'm sure that many NASA and other gov't projects are also in bad shape. So, paying more money to employees has not increased efficiency.

all government employees are overpaid, underworked, lazy, stupid, and underqualified. they have actual retards making 40k a year. yes, mentally handicapped individuals that dont do ANY work because they are related to someone.

That's not even counting those in congress!

They give all the federal employees raises so they can collect more taxes so they can pay higher wages to federal employees! Its like a death spiral but goes up! Pretty soon Federal employees will be making a million dollars per year just so the government can have a higher tax revenue!

This makes sense to any government economist. Sure its absolutely insane to the rest of us, but hey...we dont run this country. What did you think? That this country was run by the people, for the people?
