Silver margin 2010/11

Hi

Does anyone trading silver futures (say SI) in 2010/11 recall how much (full) margin requirements increased when silver rose from $17 (in Aug 2010) to $50 (in Apr 2011)?

For anyone who might be interested, SI margin went from $5,000 on 2 Aug 2010 to $8,700 on 25 Apr 2011, rising further to $16,000 on 9 May 2011 and later to $18,500 at year's end.

$3600 is Maintenance Margin. $3960 is Initial.

Maintenance is currently $3,300.

So Initial is $3,630.

And to answer your pondering, yes, SI margins were outrageous a few years ago. I recall gasping at how high they were on that metal.

But now, take a gander a Palladium. (PA) Good grief!

What's strange about it? Exchanges frequently start chasing their tail when volatility explodes higher. In the case of silver, looks like the exchanges were putting the kibosh on what was turning into a very parabolic move (especially in those early days of QE, QE2, QE3, etc). It's really never been the same since.

(Edit: I actually forgot it took out the Hunt Brothers 1980 high's. Certainly wasn't "turning into a parabolic move", it was in a full bore Hunt Brothers parabola)
