We had a similar event in Tampa - in our neighborhood. A father - who was a cop of all people - had a loaded gun in his bedroom. His argument was the bedroom door was locked. But his kid had friends over and they were smoking pot and playing video games. One of the friends said he was looking for a bathroom - gets into the bedroom, gets the gun and thinks its fun to play with.

Shoots the kid who lives there in the head, kills him. This father paid the ultimate price for his stupidity, as he lost his own child. I was SOOO fucking pissed off. So avoidable.

True but the lawsuits act as a faster chilling effect for states without such criminal negligence laws. Home owners insurance rates will go up for gun owners knowing they can be liable and incentives offered for gun locks, gun safes, fingerprint locks etc.. Gun owners might be finally scared straight to not leave loaded guns loosely lying around.

I agree prison is a better deterrent but I dont think there are enough laws in the 50 states for parents to get sentenced so it will take awhile for each state to enact such laws WHILE fighting the NRA.

Lawsuits are the quicker way until legislation catches up.

Hopefully in Michigan the dad will be charged because knowing you can go to prison for 20 years as an accessory to murder should wake these fucktards up who think owning a gun is like having toy in the house.

The government can very easily come up with the idea to require liability insurance for all gun owners. They are good at such things.

In addition to what Tree said, if someone gets hurt in your house because of improperly stored gun and you get sued I wonder if people will use their home owner's policy to cover them for liability. If home owners or umbrella policies cannot be used when you are sued then I guess it is not an issue.

I think if liability insurance is required that would be so expensive. I would not want to insure a gun owner knowing that if he messes up he could get sued for millions and then want to be covered by insurance.

I think a few lawsuits wiping out families and some prison sentences is the only true deterrant but I wish there was still another way to make sure people are financially burdened to make sure their guns are properly stored.

I think this needs to be the norm now for any shooting where the gun is linked to a parent. I think the law that allows parents to let their underage kid use a weapon needs to also be reviewed (Sandy Hook). 2nd Amendment was not intended for kids and parents who are fucktarded should go to prison and share a cell with their child.
 
This coming court case will set precedence via holding the Parents accountable...criminally and civilly.

Lawyers (prosecutors) across the country will watch and applaud these charges against the dumbass parents.

These idiots knew their kid was fucked up and still bought him a gun that he legally could not own along with knowing his deterioration in his social life and school.

I'm listening to the Prosecutor right now...its amazing how much the parents knew before and on the day of the shooting...even while it was happening.

I hope these dumbass parents go to prison for a long time and that it sends a message to other parents across the country that if the government isn't going to stop this bullshit...the parents will go to jail for when their children kill other children. It's just mind boggling what the parents did...purchased a gun for their kid along with knowing he took the gun to school (an responsible assumption considering the school was complaining to the parents...twice) and then the parents telling their kid to be more careful to not get caught with the gun.

In my opinion, the school is at some fault too in that they allowed the kid to remain at school instead of forcing the parents to take him home with them, or the kid face suspension. Strangely, the school had armed security...why didn't the armed security check the kid's backpack and school locker ?

Further, the school should have reported this kid's behavior to law enforcement including giving law enforcement access to the internet searches this kid was doing at the school.

I hope prosecutors all over the country use this case to go after parents for being negligent in their gun ownership in which their children were able to gain access. Too many school shootings in the past in which Parents walk away without any criminal liability.

These Parents are fucked and will go to prison for a very long time...it will send a message to all gun owners with children...the schools should also be held responsibility (civil liability) when they allow these types of kids to remain in their school without checking their backpacks and school lockers.

Government will not do anything...its now legal open season on the Parents.

Years ago I read about a guy, frying chicken, loaded handgun on the counter, his cat jumps up there and knocks the gun off, it discharges and kills him.

To be clear, I'm not recommending the death penalty for improperly stored firearms.
