Should Republicans Take Dem's First Offer?

While the democrats' public posture has been that they will not negotiate, that is becoming increasingly untenable. They are certainly not winning the PR battle with anyone who doesn't watch MSNBC, and they arguably are losing it.

Reid is smart enough not to reveal his cards, but there have been enough hints in the liberal press to reveal his strategy. Part of Obamacare involved an excise tax on medical devices, one of the few remaining industries the US is preeminent in. It is unpopular with not only republicans but with plenty of democrats as well, as they have device manufacturers in their districts.

The compromise being covertly floated is to repeal this tax in exchange for funding the remainder of Obamacare. It is being styled a win-win result, in that the republicans can claim a victory and the repeal is at least somewhat bipartisan.

No doubt the usual republican surrender monkeys are desperate to take this deal. Then they can safely get back to the business of selling out their constituents. But is it a good deal?

A basic rule of negotiating is to never accept the first offer. So just on that ground, the republicans should hold out for more. Beyond that, getting rid of a small tax seems like a mighty poor payoff for going all in. They risked getting smoked and have basically survived longer than most of them expected. The fact is, most voters are only dimly aware there is even a shutdown, and of the ones that are aware, a lot of them support it, if only on grounds of sticking it to federal bureaucrats.

So my advice is no, don't take this offer. The minimum I would accept is a delay of Obamacare until after the next election.

Hell no it's not a good deal. The medical device tax is a gimmie to take away. Anything less than the complete repeal of all sweetheart deals and exemptions is a no deal far as I'm concerned. If we're going to see it enforced, then it should be the same for everyone. No special circumstances for anyone, especially congress. Everybody pays up.

Hell no... we americans need to win one.
the medical device reversal just makes fricken sense... that is not a win that should not even be a bargaining chip.

that would just be what sober, honest pols should be doing.

We voted out the dems... they lost the power of the purse.
The dems can vote for the appropriations one by one as their constituents theaten the hell out of them.

Whose getting pissed.... govt workers and liberals and lefists... who do they vote for?

The dems will cave... they can sign those budget bills piece by piece the way it should be.

no more omnibus budgets.

Not to derail the topic.

AAA, being in that area I think, you happen to know if the WWII memorial is still being barracked?

I haven't mentioned it to the wife yet. But I'm kicking around the idea of maybe driving up there to participate in any protest of the barricade that might still be going on.
I'd love to be in a large group of citizens brushing past the rangers in defiance of Onazi. I'm thinking maybe....a minimum of 100 or so wouldn't even be arrested, let alone shot.

I don't know if it is or not. According to Drudge, they reinforced the barricades.

They just shot and killed an apparently delusional woman here yesterday who had knocked over some temporary barriers at the White House then drove off. She had a baby in the car with her, but they spared it.

A democrat first offer is probably like a car dealers first offer where they offer you the car above sticker.

They may charge the baby as a terrorist accomplice. Can't be too careful these days. Yesterdays action did seem a wee bit over done. Should have been a better way to resolve that issue. It's not like she was out blasting away with the dreaded AR-15. A car bomb she just would have set off, and that would have been that.
