Actually it is 2300 lives and painful . However it is miniscule in comparison to the 700,000 who dies in car accidents over those years. Armies can acts as deterrents, but they also must be able to fight some of the time.

The Afghan army was defending the Country against the Taliban for the last 7 years. They were losing 7000 soliders on average each year. They were holding back the Taliban with the help of US intel and air support. It was a draw.
They realised they didnt stand a chance without US help, so quickly folded.

To maintain that situation only required about 3 or 4 thousand US troops and double that in Nato troops.

US has 30,000 to 50,000 people in south korea to help them to defend against the North. For decades.
US soliders in europe to deter the Russians. For last 70 years.

Now Afghan is going to fall back into the hands of Al-queda training camps and other Islamic terrorists. Big win for the Terrorists & China, Iran, Russia. All that was required was a few thousand US troops and some more Nato troops (europeans were willing) to assist the 300K strong Afghan army that was been fighting the Taliban for the last 7 years.

There was no poltical pressure in either US or Europe to withdraw sp q
