"Retail stores in major cities are suffering from an unprecedented spike in theft," Jordan, the ranking member on the committee, wrote in the letter. "The criminals carrying out these acts are emboldened by 'soft on crime' policies and progressive prosecutors who refuse to enforce the law. These retail businesses are already suffering due to record inflation, a massive labor shortage, and supply chain issues. Now this surge in theft is forcing some retail stores to close permanently. Three women and a teenager used motorized handicap shopping carts and "booster" bags to swipe hundreds of dollars worth of merchandise from Bergen County-area stores, Rochelle Park police said. Security at the ShopRite on West Passaic Street grabbed one of them -- Jada McIntosh, 22, of Paterson -- and turned her over to Lt. Jim DePreta and Officer Joe Buono around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19. The others left her behind and fled in a black BMW sedan with bogus license plates. Maywood police helped Officer Zim Zenock and Sgt. Doug Arendacs capture the trio, who'd parked on a cul-de-sac in Maywood hoping to avoid detection, DePreta said.

Pack of robbers steal $500,000 in goods from NYC store
NEW YORK - A group of seven robbers went into a store on Madison Ave. on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and snatched nearly $500,000 in goods.
The NYPD says it happened about 6 p.m. on Feb. 20 at the RealReal, a luxury consignment shop with locations in New York City and other parts of the United States.
The robbers grabbed jewelry, watches, and handbags from the store before running off and getting into a car.
Police estimated the stolen goods were valued at approximately $498,000.
