I just always assumed that phrase was coined by rich, fat cat Wall Street types (think Randolph and Mortimer Duke) who could afford to spend the entire summer on vacation at their beach house in The Hamptons after making a killing in the market the previous nine months.
Randolph and Mortimer Duke were not in Wall Street. They were the commodity types from Philadelphia. I actually saw the townhouse that Winthrop lived in on sale on Zillow few years ago btw. I recognized it instantly just from the interior. They still kept the little kitchen where Coleman prepared the breakfast with the squeezed orange juice and the living room but they completely gutted the place and completely renovated the dining room and created an atrium behind it. And the bed that Winthrop woke up in in the opening scene of the movie; it was actually in the library of the house. LOL Movie magic...
