Well-rounded doesn't mean average.
In college admissions “well rounded” is code words for admitting the intellectually sub-par.

Actually to be well rounded average must be included. If you only have exceptional or "interesting" people then you are only exposing your student body to those type people, which is fine if that's their choice. Just don't call it well rounded.
I would argue that these high end schools cannot possibly offer a well rounded environment for their students. Having a few tokens from the various races and social strata does not give one real exposure to these groups. Well rounded only comes from living among the people. In truth very few people are well rounded.
