Selection process for finding stocks likely to have a direction for the day

I was just wondering if any fellow stock traders have any insight on finding stocks that are highly likely to move in one direction on the day. Obviously stocks with above average volume and news probably fit this criteria best, but is there anything in particular news you look for? I'm a tape reader and want to improve my selection process.

i would add-traded at very narrow range for most of the time on previous day(or last half of that day)and opens away from this base+ what you already mentioned above.
i've seen a lot of those bastards hitting my stops lately. particularly in 2013. on top of that-according to my observations-stocks are very trendy now. both nasdaq and nyse stocks are became very similar and betting on reversals ain't working as it was before.
