I have been trying to learn as much as possible about options over the past few months. I want to get started by buying and selling some puts and calls. However, I feel I need a little mentorship from an experienced options trader to kind of 'get me over the hump' and get me started with my first few trades. Most of the time - doesn't work that way.
Gazillion of beginners looking for one as well.
Some just imagine that they put in a lot, some do so for real & some do nothing and ask info for free.
My personal experience, people looking out for mentors - aren't 100% sure about that which they want in life. If they stick long enough, quite often, they realize, that this (or any other craft) isn't for them.
Noneless, something that might help you :
show the potential & the mentor might show up, even without asking for one.
(potential can be things as work ethic/determination/creativity/curiosity)
Otherwise, for him, it could be just a waste of time, because :
,,As much as possible'' might be 5 hours per week & that's anything but enough. ( met people like that )
If noone contacts you, just stick to the community. Lot's of option veterans in here. Check the ,, Journals '' sub-forum, - might find something useful. More likely, after a while, it's impossible to miss on some gems, that would improve your game.

Appreciate that. I have had a mentor but his health hasn't been great and he's got a lot on his plate now in his life. So, I thought I'd reach out beyond. I just thought it would be nicer to have some personal face-to-face contact with someone or some people rather than continuously doing what I have been doing and going from site to site and researching in so many different places.
It is not like I would have nothing to offer. I have a lot of trading / investing experience, and there is no question I could offer someone some pretty good ideas. I am all about learning from others and others learning from me. Like I said, I could carry on doing what I am doing but was hoping to meet some people face-to-face and share ideas - and help get me started in the right direction. Either way, I will start making some trades in the next few days...

As you can imagine, many people make those claims. Perhaps, a mentor, actively selling his services will reach out as that would be part of their routine job, to talk to potential clients. Otherwise, not likely, as typically, this is a waste of time.
It will help if you have a series of posts / journal / blog to showcast your ability to contribute and a good judgement.
ValeryN, I was actually heavily involved in the forex market for about 10 years. Last June, I shut down my currency account and went back into the stock market. I had been investing / trading on the stock market prior to that decade in forex. Hence, I am trying to learn and get going in options. If anyone were to seek assistance, I would be happy to help.
Why buying? What durations (day, week, months)?
Options trading is not good for everyone. I started doing institutional options structuring and trading in 1990s. But I still do not want to trade options for my personal accounts.
For newbies, there are options theory behind it. There are also multi dimensions with vega added. I'm not saying you need MS or PhD to do options. But some solid technical background certainly helps. The way of thinking is quite different.
Maybe you can find someone who you can trust. I'm not sure if anyone would have the time to teach you all the background info and techniques.

@arncap , further to the valuable responses you've received, the best thing you can do is :
- start posting more, displaying your knowledge, asking the right questions, taking on board
the advise that is given, asking further questions, showing level-headed-ness and a
willingness to grow.
- post some trades - either ones you've just opened or thinking of opening - and ask specific
questions related to that trade. Then people can give reasoned responses. (And nope - you
are not expected to reveal your secret sauce.)
- share some of the knowledge/experiences that you already have. (eg. "Last
June, I shut down my currency account and went back into the stock market.
" - the first thing that comes to mind is "Why would he do that?" Was it cos it
was loss-making? Too intensive? Too large draw-downs? Markets have
changed? If you share something, then others are more likely to share
back.)
