just do what i do, never turn off your computer.

I have a desktop @ home that I've considered leaving on all the time so I can use magic jack vs. Pay $845/year for my landline through Verizon.

My only worry is fire. The computer I could care less about. Since I'm far from a computer expert, educate me on this. I don't want to come home to a chimney and rubble.

That isnt something i ever thought about but I would say its highly unlikely.

Think of all the countless computers that are never turned off in thousands of offices around the world and I've never heard of anything like that happening.

But, I honestly have no idea about the likelihood of fire.

If you leave it on 24/7.. presuming it idles @160W usage... and @$.20/KW/hr electricity

If I did the math right, it costs about $200/year more to leave it on all the time except for 2000 market hours.

Do you know the power usage during hibernation?

Install your OS onto a Solid State Drive (SSD).

Windows 7 64bit boot-time = 27 seconds. (Actually, some of that time is mobo start, so more like 22 sec for just Windows).

Yep thats the ticket, I have 3 Intel SSD in Raid0 Windows 7 64bit Intel i920 overclocked to 3.2ghz right at 23 seconds boot. There is no waiting for anything.
