I'm not sure that many in our country can comprehend the true insanity of radical Islam, and their support network in the Muslim community at large. Radical Islamists are serial killers. Normally serial killers work alone. On rare occasion they have a partner. What we have with radical Islam are hundreds of thousands of serial killers and a supporting network of sympathizers, mostly those who practice the Muslim religion. Of course there are exceptions, but they are few in number. These few are brave souls indeed.
The real question is how did this happen? My theory is as follows. Most every religion has WTF passages in their scripture. The Islamic religion has more than their fair share of these, you must be kidding me passages. One main difference between Islam and Christianity is the number of true believers that actually put the WTF passages into practice. So we have a very large number of people that buy into the craziness. This alone is not enough to support what we're seeing.
A large part of practicing the religion of Islam for the true believer is to take a few hours a day, face Mecca and band you f'n head on the floor repeatedly. I really do believe these people are now suffering from traumatic brain injury. This statement is not in jest. You just can't bang your head on the god damn floor for hours at a time without doing some damage. Do this for several generations and I do believe genetic mutations will occur to accommodate the insanity. Add in the WTF passages and viola, an entire nation of people gone crazy on a psychopathic level. Ridiculous? Hey, just look at how they act and tell me they're not nuts. And before any of you incredibly stupid lefties point out some snake charming Christian we have in this country please take note I'm talking about scale here, not isolated groups of head cases. You might also note, as Maher has, they aren't beheading anyone over at the Vatican. Goofy as some Christian beliefs can be, they are in no way comparable to Islam.
We are fighting a nation of psychopathic killers and it would behoove us to accept the fact that there's no talking sense to a person gone that far of the deep end. They need to be put down.

As wacky as liberals can be, normally one can discern some logic behind their positions. That logic is typically based on either self-delusion, hypocrisy or clueless imagined moral superiority, but it is there.
The stark contrast in their attitudes toward Christianity and islam defies any logic however. Db will deny it, but it is pretty clear most liberals have nothing but contempt for traditional religion, particularly Bible believing fundamentalist, evangelical varieties. At the same time, liberals bend over backwards to accommodate muslims, make excuses for them, defend them, etc.. And of course, the great irony is that islam is far more repressive than any Christian faith, and islam zeroes in on many of the progressives' most passionate causes, homosexuality, abortion, adultery, drug use, etc etc.

Religion itself has nothing to do with it. We have been interfering in the Middle East since at least the early fifties for no other reason than to protect our "interest" in their oil. Since then we have been responsible, as I said above, for hundreds of thousands of casualties. To be ignorant of all this is lazy. To be surprised at retaliation is equally ignorant, if not disingenuous.
Are jihadists right to do what they're doing? Of course not. But this xenophobic response is pointless, other than to make the xenophobes feel better. Can we "destroy" Islam? No. We couldn't do it 800 years ago, and we can't do it now. We are in a mess, but it's a mess that we created. Why? Because it's profitable. So don't be looking for any solutions -- easy or otherwise -- any time soon.

There is no debate that Christianity has become more socially liberal over the past 50 years. So has every other religion, except Islam. All other religions have become more tolerant, more forgiving, more accepting, more inclusive across the board. Islam on the other hand, as you point out, has done just the opposite. More hateful, more vengeful, less tolerant, completely unforgiving, and extremely violent.
So why, as your post suggests to ask, why has the left completely lost all sense of perspective and logic on this particular issue? I've tried to look at it from all angles. Do they hate Christianity so much that they would choose a polar opposite just for spite? Are they so niave as to think if we say we're sorry enough times that Islam will suddenly change their ways? None of that comes together as an answer. I just think they're really fucking stupid when it comes to this subject. A stupidity that evolves from an ideology that they are so heavily invested in that they simply cannot see what's right in front of them. I truly believe that the hardcore leftist, taking his last breath, would look up at his Islamic executioner and say, can't we just talk about this? I said I'm sorry. And THAT is what makes them as dangerous as the Islamic terrorists themselves.
