Residents of rural western Maryland are beyond fed up with a state that has long been run by corrupt, far-left democrats elected from Baltimore, ie all black, and the Washington suburbs, ie either all black or very liberal. It all seemed very strange to us, but the increasingly polarized nature of our politics makes it seem very understandable.
It is one thing to be in the minority when the majority shares broad principles with you, which was the situation for most of our country's existence. It is quite a different matter when there are not only no shared principles, but a willingness on the part of tose in control to impose an extreme agenda that is vigorously opposed by the minority. This is the exact dynamic that led to the Civil War.
