Scientists warn of 'emergency on global scale'

Quote from futurecurrents:

Oh so some guy who works on some obscure part of the electronics of a satellite is more qualified than I? I am probably more qualified by virtue of my degree than anyone here.

I don't think they are paid shills or political operatives but I do think they are ideologically blinded to only see one way.

this helps explain your puzzling position...

"So, conservatives tend to be "individualists"-- meaning, essentially, that they prize a system in which government leaves you alone -- and "hierarchs," meaning, they are supportive of various types of inequality.

The individualist is threatened by global warming, deeply threatened, because it means that markets have failed and governments -- including global governments -- have to step in to fix the problem. And some individualists are so threatened by this reality that they even spin out conspiracy theories, arguing that all the world's scientists are in a cabal with, like, the UN, to make up phony science so they can crash economies."

Very interesting article but beware, you may see yourself in it.

I dont read links you post. Most people would be embarrassed to have the degree that you constantly point to. You arent qualified to discuss the topics you obsess over and you cant point to anything you do to mitigate your own carbon footprint. That makes you a hypocritical alarmist idiot.

If you want to live in a cave in the dark and eat raw food by all means feel free to do so. I'm not going to change my lifestyle one iota to conform to the irrational rantings of deranged liberals.

You don't read much of anything do you? It might conflict with what you think.

The fact is, my degree qualifies me to speak with authority on the subject. You don't even know what environmental science is. The fact you would be embarrassed by having ANY degree speaks volumes about your stupidity and irrationality.

What I do about my own carbon footprint is a red herring and beside the point. That's why I'm not answering you. First we have to get you numbskulls to see the obvious. Only large-scale, government mandated policy changes will have the needed effects and before that we have to get, ignorant, irrational, righty assholes like you to face the facts.

Why is it only govt can solve your pet problems that you liberals think is so important.

Why does it always involve stealing from others to accomplish your goals?

Quote from babutime:

Anybody who has ever been to university AND has had interactions with scientists AND worked on ANY research project AND has read ANY scientific literature AND has even the modest skills on data analysis AND has an OUNCE of respect for these underpaid scientists whose only crime is that they tend to work till the day they die much to the annoyance of post-docs and younger scientists...

KNOWS

that not only is consensus among scientists on AGW in the overwhelming majority that it is also a fact- much like evolution is a fact.

Nobody is denying that the climate is driven by factors OTHER than human.

But in the most recent history (<200 years), the change has been driven primarily by humans and that certain things have to be done to mitigate at least OUR impact.

If you don't like the fact that your puny human ego is hurt by that sad truth, go dig a hole and die.

The planet is better off without low IQ morons like you.

When you come up with a solution that does not:
1)Tax us to death
2) have us living in caves sans the fire pit.

I might listen to you.

Further to my point initially, now that the usual fools have reared their heads:

Modest CO2 cutbacks may be too little, too late for coral reefs

Ocean acidification could devastate coral reefs and other marine ecosystems even if atmospheric carbon dioxide stabilizes at 450 ppm, a level well below that of many climate change forecasts, report chemical oceanographers Long Cao and Ken Caldeira of the Carnegie Institution's Department of Global Ecology in the journal Geophysical Research Letters...
Atmospheric CO2 absorbed by the oceans' surface water produces carbonic acid, the same acid that gives soft drinks their fizz, making certain carbonate minerals dissolve more readily in seawater. This is especially true for aragonite, the mineral used by corals and many other marine organisms to grow their skeletons. For corals to be able to build reefs, which requires rapid growth and strong skeletons, the surrounding water needs to be highly supersaturated with aragonite.
"Before the industrial revolution, over 98% of warm water coral reefs were surrounded by open ocean waters at least 3.5 times supersaturated with aragonite" says Cao. "But even if atmospheric CO2 stabilizes at the current level of 380 ppm, fewer than half of existing coral reef will remain in such an environment. If the levels stabilize at 450 ppm, fewer than 10% of reefs would be in waters with the kind of chemistry that has sustained coral reefs in the past."...
At atmospheric CO2 levels as low as 450 ppm...the shells of many marine organisms would dissolve, including those at the base of the food chain."

It's that last sentence that's the killer, as it were. Cut off the base of the food chain and you will get major collapse in fish populations all the way up the line.
That will be at 450ppm, not far from where we are now. We go up about 2 or 3 per year and are at 394 now, so you can see how we're not too far from where really bad things are going to happen, well within the lifetime of the current generation of young folks.
