Schools vs prisons

Quote from peilthetraveler:
So you are saying that because they are adults and not children there is no problem? Then "logically" there should be no problem if the president encouraged and supplied the entire white house with bibles, making sure every congressman had one and always encouraged him to read it, right?

It seems to me that people don't want the bible in their lives until shit gets out of control.
As far as adults go, I don't really give a rat's ass who's encouraging whom to do what, as long as the other person is able to say no. Like if I see a hot girl at a bar, I think it's perfectly reasonable for me to "encourage" her to have sex with me, 'cause she's perfectly capable of telling me to fuck off.

In general, I think there's a lot to be said for thinking of right and wrong in religious matters in the same way one thinks about right and wrong in sex. The parallels are useful. Feel free to apply this idea to your example above.

The article said "He didn't give any sermons or yell or scream… just sharing his faith with other students. That was it,"

So let me ask you this...do you think there would've been a problem if it was a kid talking about a harry potter book with other students?

In fact...lets say a kid stood on a soapbox during lunchtime and started "preaching" about how harry potter is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Do you think there would've been ANY issue whatsoever? Do you think the kid would've been suspended for that?

I rest my case.

if another child in you kids class were to bring a koran and try to convert you kids i suspect you be up in arms.

You mean your kids, your kids and you'd be?

And you're a self proclaimed holier than thou intellectual?

LOL

No, because I would actually teach my kids about why the Koran is wrong. I wouldn't be like parents who just say "Oh those muslims are just nutjobs" or other Character assassination attempts that bible haters use but never explain why.

The different religions should be an elective course given at the high school level for those that choose to study such things. Frankly, I think people should give religion some thought and study before making up their mind. However, younger children should not be exposed to it in the classroom. Good moral principles can be, and should be taught without bringing religion into it. Religion can be taught at home, or in a church should the parents choose to do so.
