Easy! Massive fraud in health care.
I've volunteered the last 9 years in elementary schools, currently in one of the most poverty stricken schools in the area. All kinds of kids there; some straight A kids who come from horrible situations. But there are problems with education, from a financial perspective, that need addressing. Teachers pensions and health care benefits in retirement are way too generous. They have to be scaled back, especially for those who bail (i.e. retire) at their earliest opportunity and then come back as paid tutors, substitute teachers, etc. No city/county/state can sustain these overly generous benefits.
If parents really care about their childrens education, home internet access is relatively cheap, and most public libraries are still open.
Public education is a bottomless money pit, exposes children to anti-social behaviour in the extreme, and is, for all practical purposes, irrelevant.
If young parents need a baby-sitter, there are options available that are sociably, educationally, and physically healthy.

Unfortunately, the U.S. (and most democracies) will have to be in worse shape than Greece before they seriously cut back on even the worthless entitlements. You should have to contribute something, before you can vote, i. e., when you have more "takers" than "makers", you get trouble. Stosh

The public school system, has for decades, wasted american taxpayers money. Unions have held back those who want to change the way "Money is spent" and the national school system has ZERO accountablity for teachers.
The Public School system has failed. It is broke and the Socialist want to keep the failed system in place. This will be to the harm of the nation and the kids > And, of course the Socialist do not care because they believe its for the "Collective" good.
The school system was hijacked by the once Liberal base, now we know all to true to be Socialist, under the leadership of the Teachers Union.
I have no answer, no quick and painless fix. I was educated in the private school system and our academic records blew the City Schools away. Teachers were paid less than public socialist education camps. We had zero fed funding and the money came from "donations".
I was educated in a Private University setting. We blew away Public Universities in Academics once again. However, the Private University did have fed funds contributed. However, their academic standing forced all "Bridge" program students to shit or get off the pot after their first year. 70% of the "Bridge" program transfered to state schools after their first year. Could be the Tution cost on top of the Academics that caused this.
Never the less, all Socialistic programs are failing this Decade. The Public School system is just one of them.
Maybe as the Socialist retreat, as in the IN gov. and congress incumbents, on both sides, are voted out. We can start a decade of repairing capitalism and democracy.
However, I'm not betting my life on it...I'm just making as much money as I can and stacking my chips so I'm on the right side of the WALL when the shit goes down.
