Scapling using futures as indicators

I have a question for the good scalpers out there, hey steve :)

I have found many people saying that they watch the futures to see the immediate trend then jump quickly on the stocks to follow through, my question is why not watch SPY ? I always thought that SPY actually is identical to the futures in terms of trends and big moves, is this correct or am I missing something here ?
 
the problem is that money flows to the future markets before reaching the stock market and etf's.

I don't remember the exact process but it has something to do with arbitrage.
