Saving Darfur

China won't let the UN do anything about Darfur, and of course the UN obfuscates the Muslim on Christian rape & violence aspect. Then, we have a few outspoken liberal dunces here in the US urging the US or anyone to do something; these are people like Don Cheadle who have the means to go to Darfur, but not the guts to stay there and join the raped and enslaved fight back.

replace "oil" with "strategic interests" and they'd be correct.

Black Hawk Down is a case and point against our involvment in Darfur. The liberated turned on the liberators. Who the hell needs more of that.

It's all such bullshit. If the world is to ever get serious about these kinds of things, and is earnest about not letting something like Rwanda happen again, then there needs to be a standing UN armed force, a quick reactionary force, that should be deployed and create protective encleaves for those being slaughtered. No more politics.

Since noone wants to take the fight to the bad guys, hire some mercenaries.

Just fucking do it.

But, being the UN, that will never happen. :(

Quote from CaptainObvious:

There is no civil war. They are having tribal wars now, just like they have for hundreds of years. But that is not the point of my OP.
The point is, if you're an American you get to have and opinion and you have a reasonable expectation of having that opinion given serious consideration. Why? Because you have skin in the game, that's why. It's our tax dollars being spent and our people fighting and dieing trying to referee these savages. It's our money and our people that deliver 99.9999% of the humanitarian aid around the world.
Just once, anywhere in the world, at anytime, for any reason, I'd like to see someone else do the heavy lifting. Darfur is just one example. Just once let the EU spend the 50 billion while we spend the 5 million. Just once the Russians send the thousands of aid workers while we send 10.
As human beings all of us, American or not, are entitled to an opinion. What the rest of you don't have is that reasonable expectation of being taken seriously. Get some real skin in the game and we can have a serious discussion. Until then, you're just noise.

and guess where those hundreds of billions of tax dollars, OUR tax dollars, are going towards? right into the pockets of halliburton, boeing, lockheed and any other war profiteer. guess who gets kickbacks from those companies? not you and me but those sitting in the senate and white house. most people are willing to do anything for $200MM a day, even if it means prolonging the war and causing more soldiers to die.

and if iraq gets back on its feet, guess who has first dibs on their oil? that's right! the american oil companies. guess who gets all the contracts for reconstruction? bingo, the american construction companies.

the war was never about liberating the iraqi people. it is all about financial and/or political gain and always will be. we aren't in darfur because the profit potential isn't worth it and also because our resources are tied up at the moment.

and to be fair, the usa is by far the wealthiest nation on the planet so we naturally will be targeted for donations. don't you think bill gates gets tons of requests for donations? yes it would be nice if other countries gave out free lunches but no one gives out free lunches, not even us.
