Save the COT report.

The CFTC May End COT Reports!

As the fine commodity trader Dan Norcini says:

"I suggest any trader out there who reads those reports and has come to rely on them as much as I do to take a bit of time to visit the web page of the CFTC and urge them to retain the report. Please be polite and do not accuse them of deliberately trying to obfuscate the markets. Express to them how much you appreciate the report’s usefulness and offer a few suggestions for improvements if you feel there is some need. Remember, they are actively seeking public comments so this is the time to make your voice heard."

If you go to this government link it provides all necessary information for submitting comments. Well worth the effort.

Cot used to be weekly. Now I think its biweekly. As far as its utility, if you know how to read it, and apply it to an appropiate time frame, ie weekly at least, it is very prophetic. Please note it does not call the time frame or the magnitude but 80% of the time I would say there is a move from the extremes in the pros/public.

I think Genesis software(not the broker) is still the only people who supply this indicator. There was also a charting company whose name escapes me. Use Cot with Larry Williams pinch/paunch technique = not bad.

If you have never seen this graphically, its quite fascinating.

Thanks for the link mschey. I hit up for my support even though I dont use Cot anymore. Transparency is always a good thing.

I don't know if this helps, but a friend of mine who trades the agricultural futures swears by the COT charts.

The CFTC May End COT Reports!

Valuable Trading Information

LOST FOREVER!!!

We may lose the Commitment Of Traders Report forever!
Unless we let the CFTC (Commodities Futures Trading Commission) know how important the COT Report is to traders.

Every trader knows the importance of information. Don’t let them take this valuable information away from you.

SAVE THE COT REPORT!
The COT Report is the only report that tells you where the commercial traders are putting the BIG money into the market. It lets you see where commercial investors believe the best opportunities are in relation to where the smaller investors are putting their money. It gives you a distinct advantage in trading the U.S. markets.

This report is the bread and butter for many professional traders. Even if you don’t use the COT Report now, you may wish you could have this information in the future. Help to make sure that this information stays available now and in the future.

The CFTC (Commodities Futures Trading Commission) has indicated that they may stop publishing the all important Commitment of Trader Report, pending input from the public.

To save the COT Report they need to hear from you by no later than August 20, 2006.

If you would like to respond to the CFTC about the planned demise of the COT Report, simply click one of the links below.

Click here to edit and send your e-mail message.

Genesis has tried to make responding easy for you, with the option of
e-mail responses and regular mail responses.
We all know that regular mail can be more effective than e-mail.
If you choose this option Genesis will print and post this letter for you at no cost to you.

Be sure to include your name and address for regular mail or Genesis will not be able to send your message.

Click here to edit and send your e-mail plus regular mail message through Genesis.

Traders....time to take action. The big boys don't want you to know what their doing, so they can continue to screw over the little guy. Let's unite to save the COT report. Click on the link below, send an email and let the CFTC know how we feel about this.

I e-mailed the letter, hope this works.

Quick, write a letter to the CFTC to save the COT data re-packaging industry and its vendors.

This reporting and resulting data requirement grew out of the Hunt Bros. silver squeeze. Markets and participant make up have changed big time over the last 20-some years.

The COT data and reporting requirements have outgrown its meaning and usefulness. The CFTC recognizes this. Unless, of course, you are a vendor of these numbers and have a captured market.

Let me see.....I can put up weekly rain fall in Iowa and plot that against the price of corn and sell it. Now THAT might be of more value than now-meaningless COT data.

I just send the letter for helping to save the COT report.

So any news regarding the action of canceling the report?

I hope it will stay!!!!!

In all this argument about whether it's useful or not, it really depends in what you're trying to get out of it, and then what you intend to do with it. Without any training or experience, few things are useful. As for the COT, I've been using it for a while by taking the information and separating whether the market is trending or trading (by the players themselves instead of general technical indicators) and then I align my trading system to only take trades in the ditection of the data. This has saved me from a great deal of bad trades, which by default have made me a better trader.

As for who has the COT data, there are several.

GenesisFT
Shatterfield
TrackandTrade

And I think OmniTrader and CSI may still have it available.

Finally, I think that the deadline has passed for the CFTC letters and theny may not be accepting anymore (If I remember, August 21st was the deadline).

Anyway, my two cents :)
