Well in Europe many people still very much feel that way. Here in America, ethnicity is mostly tied to race although sometimes it can be more specific than that. In any case, I'd just settle for European heritage.

Not really. It's not up to you to determine how other people "should" handle their own personal family issues. That's part of what's wrong with left wing nuts, they want to tell everyone how to run their family, and tell people what they should or shouldn't think about a what should be personal issues.
