One option is to buy new (to you) LCDs from retailers with liberal, customer-friendly return / exchange policies (e.g., Amazon). Even if it costs slightly more than some other online retailer. The local stores are usually blindingly bright anyway to judge the image quality reliably... both the screen settings (as mentioned above) and, even worse, the stores themselves.
 
what do you guys think about that HANNS monitor? i konw its bagain, they are selling for only 100 bucks for the 19in lcd version. any comments? i'm not looking for the best but something that will be decent.

I've had one for almost 3 months. It's decent... certainly worth the money.

Amazingly enough I bought one of these online. It looked good but when I received it it was only 2.5" and the instructions were all in Russian or maybe it's Polish. Damn!!!!! http://monitoruj.pl/monitoring/14/
