Here in Australia there is some processed meat, some smallgoods, called 'Berliner' so it could have been that Kennedy
was actually saying 'I am a sausage' rather than saying "I am a doughnut.

It is however just as likely that in Kennedy's case he meant "I am a 'Berliner man', a lover of berliner sausage, I just absolutely love that stuff on my sandwich.
