Saltynuts's trend following journal

I guess what I'm thinking about is when I can draw a line right above and below the price levels of at least 3 of the candle boxes (probably more) and those lines are pretty steeply sloped upwards or downwards.

The details are in the eye of the beholder, of course. I'm all ears!

Being casual about it or being rigorous will lead to completely different outcomes. Post a chart with bar numbers and your annotated TL’s if you want more specific feedback.

If trading futures salty chocolate balls (We miss Chef) I would go for cheap commission, IB want a fortune to swing trade a futures contract I recall.

IB data is crappy, many traders use IB for execution but CQG data feed. But there are a lot of decent platforms, I know a three guys who average in the 2 to 4k a day range on Ninja trader and NT brokerage.

Top step trader is a valid route, they get sagged off a lot for being a hamster wheel but really at the beginning there is a lot to learn there. Just understand that there is a culture clash between Dunning Kruger effected short term scalper and DK swing traders. :) do both scalp and swing and it will pay off.

Thanks Startibartfast. If I ever manage to turn a profit trading just 1 share of SPY I'll check these out for futures. For just regular stock IB has pretty much the best rates no? I'll need to check out their most recent rates - I've been with them for like maybe a decade or more - I'm sure they've changed.

Understood Sprout. Will be getting more specific when I figure out an actual plan haha. Just trying to get the feel of the market now.

The suggestion will give you a ‘feel’ of the market by doing work to understand the basic granularity of PA.
People have control of when and where to start the process of purposeful learning which continues indefinitely in iterative refinement. Perfectionism is one of the first stumbling blocks to turn into a stepping stone.

Every bar is informative when one has developed their mind to ‘see’ by creating a spectrum of differentiation.

HH, HL, LH, LL’s, RTL and LTL’s are a start and there is so much more.

I thought I put it above - in the paper trade account their bars on the chart would not automatically update. And when I tried to do it manually half the time it wouldn't work. Plus the prices shown on the charts were not the current prices - when I would place a market order I'd get a price WAY away from where it was shown on the bars. Yours might work just fine, could just be mine is screwy.
Ok, so you don't have real-time data with IB.
Not sure who sucks here...
You get for what you pay I guess.

I wish you good luck then.

Again, I do most certainly have real time data with my real IB account. In the 5 minutes I was playing around in my paper trading account, the little default chart that I'm used to looking at did not appear to be getting the real-time updates.

Not typing that out a fourth time lol.

Thanks Sprout! Question - when you say this -

HH, HL, LH, LL’s, RTL and LTL’s are a start and there is so much more.

What are those abbreviations? Higher highs, higher lows, lower highs, lower lows, I would guess, and the last two? You are suggesting I look for those things on the charts first?

Thanks!
