I think 3 was the wisest choice. You guys (since you are obviously Russian) have no business in Chechnya. Let's be honest about it, it all comes down to oil. Don't you have freaking enough of it???
Yes we (ok, include me too, althoug I'm a Canadian citizen now but I'm still Russian) have business in Chechnia. And it's not OIL since there's NO oil there at all. There's a pipeline from Baku (Azerbaijan) and a refinery in Grozny but no oil. So what is our business? I'll tell you - protection of Russian people. Right after perestroika there were thousands of russian killed by chechens in Chechnia, many were turned into slaves. Naturally it was a genocide. Should've we swallow that? This is why the first war started. In 1996 after huge losses from both sides Russia and Chechnia signed the peace pact and chechens were given almost full autonomy.
Now how the second war started? In 1998 a group of chechenian vakhabits invaded Dagestan - small republic in southern Russia. They tried to take over the republic and make it an islamic state. Many Russian citizens were killed. Should've we swallowed that?
Had I seen my town distroyed, my relatives and friends abused/killed, the places where I grew up and where all my childhood memories are associated with leveled with the ground - no telling what I'd be doing in their place.
They should've thought about it before. They thought they could kill people, take them into slavery, kidnap for ransom and Russia would tolerate that? Yes, Russia is weak now but we couldn't just wipe of the spit from our face and do nothing.
I think you should let them be independent. Every people has a right to freely choose what country they wanna be a part of.
You preferred to save face and escalate this cycle of violence further. It's not gonna stop other Chechens from doing even more horrific acts.
You really think so? Maybe US should let Texas go too because some guys want an independence for it? Chechnia has been a part of Russia for about 150 years. Besides, I mentioned that they were given autonomy in 1996 but they didn't know what to do with it. Oh, no, they knew - they decided to make it a terrorists state, a centre of drug trafficing to Russia, a territory where they could hide russians untill the ransom is paid.
Russia has been pursuing this "I want it so now it's mine" policy for all it's history. I'm Ukrainian and I know this quite well from the experience of Russian-Ukrainian relationships. You wanted to have access to the mediterranean - so you parked you fleet in our Crimean peninsular and unofficially called the place yours...
It's good that Ukrainian people are less prone to violence then Chechens are. But I (and MANY-MANY others) will always be bitter about it. And we WILL kick your butts out of there one day. It's only an matter of time.
