I presume it's a move intended to force Russian troops back from Ukraine from extremely fortified positions, and that the UA forces will retreat back to the border as soon as that is accomplished. However I obviously don't know since information is very scarce still.
Yes, this is a spoiler attack intended to destroy Russian equipment launching missiles and shells at Ukraine -- as well as disrupting the Russian attacks in the Kharkiv region by forcing the Russians to divert troops back inside Russia. The Ukrainian military does not plan to hold the Russian territory but will move back into Ukraine when this attack is complete.
We are now in Day 2... and things are just looking worse and worse for the Russians. It's amusing to watch the vatniks whine "How dare they invade Russia"; it's like the Russians are not self-aware that they have invaded the sovereign nation of Ukraine deliberately causing massive destruction and carrying out endless war crimes for over two years now.
