Putin knew damn well he couldn't fight in Syria and Ukraine at the same time.Even though Trump wouldn't have done anything about Putin invading Ukraine he had to worry that other European countries would help Ukraine and unlike Crimea he knew Ukraine would fight back if he tried to take Kiev.

Putin had to wait until Syria and covid was stable before going into Ukraine.
