Looks like Russia's using some brutal tactics to take places like Bakhmut . They push lower grade troops forward as cannon fodder against dug in defenders so they expose their positions. Then the troops behind can identify and engage the dug in defending Ukr's .

The British used a similar tactic in Afghanistan but without the high casualty rates obviously. Infantry went out on patrols to attract the enemy . The patrol would start moving out and the Taliban would engage . Unfortunately for the Taliban , the SAS come in behind and take them out .
