Russia & Ukraine

After a quick read, I can't exactly figure out who the players are here. Looks like it was not a Ukrainian hit job but, instead, tribal warfare between Putin and Wagner and other hardliners who are jockeying for power.
It is. There is a huge outcry about it in certain Russian circles. Hope it causes trouble.

We can agree that "being shot in the head" probably is not what Ruskie Boy wanted.

That's fine with me. Go for it.

Pro-Putin mercenary who waved the 'skull of a dead Ukrainian' in front of crowd and called for the killing of civilians is shot in the head and 'in grave condition' following possible 'warning hit' to Wagner group

This looks like the Kadyrov Chechens are having it out for the Wagner crowd.

"According to the journalist, “karma caught up” with Mangushev, and it was soldiers of Chechen warlord Ramzan Kadyrov who most likely shot the Russian mercenary."

I am withholding judgement.

The article says: "Russian sources also confirmed that an “accident” happened to the mercenary."

So apparently there is a chance that he was cleaning his pistol and accidently shot himself in the back of the head.

Only Alec Baldwin would believe that.

Well...

“The details are still uncertain, but they say there is a reason to shout ‘Akhmat-sila!’” Kazanskyi said, quoting what Mangushev’s attackers are reported to have cried during the shooting.

I would like to see how he was able to do this to himself. Must be quite the contortionist.

“Information from the doctors: it was made from a short-barreled weapon, a bullet of approximately 9 mm, close-up, occipital-parietal region, wound channel from the back down at 45 degrees,” the Russians quoted one of the invaders who fought in the same unit as Bereg.

Of course like many others this Russian is a neo-Nazi.

Mangushev is the leader of the neo-Nazi movement “Light Rus”. He is also considered the creator of PMC “Raccoon”, which closely cooperated with Russia’s FSB security service.

Most likely, if they are doing their job, the CIA will plant disinformation showing that Kadryrov ordered the hit (which he probably did anyway) and then just step back and watch it play out.

The equivalent of Mexican drug cartels are taking shape in Moscow and out on the front.

I know nothing.

'Ultra-patriots' may try to overthrow Putin because of his army's failures in Ukraine, says Russian MP

  • The biggest threat to Putin is ultra-nationalists, a pro-Kremlin Russian MP said.
  • Oleg Matveychev said "ultra-patriots" could overthrow Putin over his army's performance.
  • "The situation is not so critical yet, but 2023 will be very dangerous," Matveychev said.
A leading Russian MP said that his country's "ultra-patriots" could try to overthrow President Vladimir Putin in frustration with their army's performance in Ukraine.

Oleg Matveychev — an MP with Russia's largest political party, United Russia, which backs Putin — said in an interview that the biggest threat to Putin is now supporters of the Ukraine war who are unhappy with the progress of the conflict, The Times of London reported.

He said that for Putin "the situation is not so critical yet, but 2023 will be very dangerous," the Times reported.

Matveychev is often referred to as the Kremlin's "spin doctor" due to frequent comments on behalf of top government officials.

However, his latest comments are unlikely to please those in the Kremlin.

Matveychev said that "ultra-patriots" in the country will likely put forward a candidate to run against Putin in next year's presidential elections, when Putin is set to run for a fifth term.

He added that the candidate would likely follow the playbook from a series of protests in Ukraine in 2013, which ended in Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych, who was allied with Russia, being ousted.

He referred to this as following "the Maidan scenario," referring to Independence Square in Kyiv, where those protests largely took place.

"An ultra-patriotic Maidan with a light dose of leftism, talk about corruption — these are a means to bring people out, and the trigger could be anything," he said, highlighting some of the battlefield setbacks in Ukraine.

Putin has become increasingly isolated from the rest of the world since his invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, with the West imposing further sanctions on Russia and even his longtime allies criticizing the war.

In Russia he's also faced backlash from pro-war figures, who are unhappy with the army's performance and want even more brutal tactics in Ukraine. A former Putin speechwriter said last month that a coup could happen in Russia as military generals are frustrated at their troops' defeats.

"As problems pile up in the country and the army, that the authorities are unable to solve, Putin is more steadily transforming in people's eyes from a great strategist to an ordinary, second-rate dictator," the speechwriter said.

The situation is actually is bit worse than this article presents. This bit about the ultranationalists being a threat is pretty much old news. It is not that Putin does not recognize this. The problem is that he has taken steps to give more power to the untranationists or hardliners to appease them and now the ones he gave more power to are an increasing threat. Wagner Guy being Exhibit A, and Kadryov/sp being Exhibit B.

What's he gonna do now to appease the hardliners? Last time he made Kadryov a full General in the Russian Army to appease him. Nevermind that he is the head of Chechnya.

What he needs is a victory in the Donbass but has put Gerasimov in charge and Gerasimove and Shoigu are the idiots who brought Putin the 3-Day War.

And the more desperately Putin needs a victory, the more he ramps up and moves forward his spring offensive.

Having said that, the next two months are going to be EXTREMELY DIFFICULT for Ukraine. The massive hoards of Russian soldiers and artillery and rockets against civilians will devastating regardless of how stupid and untrained they are. Do not underestimate how devastating it will be for the Ukrainians, and it will begin sooner rather than later because Putin needs to move ahead of the arrival of the tanks and weapons that were just approved.

This does not mean that Ukrainians cannot or will not beat back the offensive, just that this not some popcorn eating and watching even shaping up. As always the Ukrainians are vastly outnumbered and will be following their usual plan which is to just reduce everything to a lunar landscape. Needless to say though, Putin be having big problems if it does not go well for the Russians. The knives are out for him now, and he must deliver.

The other thing that Putin needs to watch out for in this coming offensive is that the Ukrainians may not let themselves be drawn into a brute strength standoff. They may let the Russians hold some areas and bypass them in return for taking a piece of the land bridge to Crimea and isolating Crimea and then hitting the bridge again. Watch your arse Vlad. You and Gerasimov and Shoigu are not all that smart.
