Russia & Ukraine

Here is a more complete story of the dismal rather than the Facebook statement from lawmaker Pavlo Frolov that the Russian propaganda outlets are pushing.

Ukraine’s Parliament Dismisses Human-Rights Chief

Ukrainian lawmakers dismissed the country’s ombudsman for human rights, Lyudmyla Denisova, in a no-confidence vote on Tuesday, concluding that she had failed to fulfill obligations including the facilitation of humanitarian corridors and countering the deportation of Ukrainians from occupied territory.

Lawmaker Pavlo Frolov said Ms. Denisova was also accused of making insensitive and unverifiable statements about alleged Russian sex crimes and spending too much time in Western Europe during the invasion.

“The unclear focus of the Ombudsman's media work on the numerous details of ‘sexual crimes committed in an unnatural way’ and ‘rape of children’ in the occupied territories that could not be confirmed by evidence, only harmed Ukraine,” Mr. Frolov said in a Facebook post.

Some 90 journalists and over 50 other professionals had signed an open letter expressing concern and outrage that Ms. Denisova had been insensitive in her airing of allegations of sexual crimes, particularly those involving children and minors.

Ukraine’s parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, didn’t name a successor to the post of ombudsman, whose role is to promote and protect human rights.

Ms. Denisova, who took on the human-rights role in 2018, said she would appeal the decision, calling it unconstitutional and a violation of international standards. "I will continue to defend Ukraine and the rights of our citizens," she wrote on the Telegram messaging platform.

The United Nations Human Rights Office in Ukraine said in a tweet on Tuesday that Ms. Denisova's dismissal was contrary to international standards and undermined the independence of an important Ukrainian institution.

Ukrainian prosecutors filed the first rape case of the war against a Russian soldier on Monday, Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova said, accusing him of breaking into a home, killing a civilian and raping his wife. Moscow has rejected accusations of war crimes and human-rights violations by Russian forces in Ukraine.

So what you claimed wasn't true because kashrin didn't link, is actually true. Oops. Time for narrative damage control, right, NPC?

Why don't you carefully read the statement from the Ukraine lawmakers on the non-confidence vote on why she was dismissed (by the way it is found in the first paragraph of the article) rather than getting information from a Facebook post of a single Ukraine lawmaker.

The source I posted is Newsweek. You'll need to increase your level of spin.

Newsweek reports:

A Ukrainian official has been relieved of her duties over her handling of reports detailing sexual assault allegations made against Russians in Ukraine.

On Tuesday, the Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, removed Lyudmila Denisova, the parliament’s commissioner for human rights, from her post, according to Ukrainska Pravda. No new appointment has been made to fill the role.

The move to dismiss Denisova came after outrage about the wording used in public reports about alleged sexual assaults committed by Russians, as well as the alleged dissemination in those reports of unverified information. Despite accusations from Ukraine, the Kremlin has repeatedly denied that Russian soldiers have committed war crimes or sexual assaults during the invasion.

Kissinger is wrong: We can’t give Putin a win in Ukraine

A very astute comment about Cal Thomas right below the article:

Cal Thomas continues to be wrong about everything. Given his outrageous lies and disinformation when supporting the afghan and iraqi disasters, a self aware man would be hesitant about encouraging another war he will never have to fight himself. Kissinger has the truth of it; Russia has occupied just about everything it said it wanted before the war, and there is no power in Ukraine, short of an all out intervention by NATO, that will evict them. And, many, if not most, of the residents of those captured areas actually want the Russians there, preferring them to the western Ukrainians. By every poll, overwhelmingly americans are against getting into a shooting war in Ukraine, regardless ; so there are two choices, 1) continue to dump weapons into a war the Ukrainians are now losing in Donbas, and will continue to lose (there is a huge difference between conducting defensive operations around Kiev and conducting offensive operations in the Donbas, hundreds of miles further east) because they are simply not competent to conduct offensives against entrenched forces with a superiority in firepower, or 2) make a deal. We finally made a deal with the Taliban, after 20 years of wasted lives and treasure, and while little Cal is obviously butt hurt about it, I am glad we are out and wish we had left 15 years ago. Hopefully Ukraine is smart enough to make a deal now and not waste 20 years of pointless bloodshed, even if it makes Cal, who is a chickenhawk and a coward at heart, sad.
Yeah, I think someone with Kissinger's vast experience is probably a bit more...just a bit, mind you, credible.

Why we would the west want to appease Russia? What benefits do we get from a security standpoint through appeasement?

I dunno, maybe peace? No more killing? Or at least less of it. De-escalation? Better world trade? Lower oil prices? Not having to give $40B to the Ukraine? I'm just spitballing here.

Did you bother even reading what Kissinger suggests? Or are you too fixed on being a chickenhawk yourself?

Ahh this is the old less killing today for lots more tomorrow.

Lets be clear Russia invaded Ukraine under false pretenses and they are, as the Chinese estimate, trying to create a “mini Soviet Union.”

No. Fight the monster today in Ukraine or we’ll be fighting it in the Baltics or Poland tomorrow. The Russians are not peaceful and they so not have good intentions.

And let’s just say your arguments about oil prices and funding are not in the likeness of Winston Churchill.
