Putin wants a ceasefire to replenish and bring in more supplies and arms. Also, I don't necessarily buy into all the party-line talk that winter is coming and the war will slow down and troops will be dug in and not much will happen. Putin has a mega-pile of missiles that he wants to unload on places like Kiev, Kharkiv, and Kherson. Those missiles and the troops who fire them could care less whether it is winter and there is snow on the ground. So they can talk or not talk as long as the Ukrainians do not get suckered into a ceasefire.

That city there in nearby Russia- Belgorod has become a real dangerous pain the ass. The Russians fire lots of missiles from there and stage all their troops and equipment there that is headed further south into the Donbass and below. The Ukrainians should flatten that fucking place and then tell Belarus Boy "you are next if you make one too many stupid moves."

The Russians are working toward a spring offensive now and want to use all the months to replenish troops and bring in an absolutely ungodly number of missiles and drones. They will want to try to dial the Ukrainians back in the meantime with a bunch of fake ceasefire attempts. Just remember these Ruskies are the same clowns who assured the world many, many times over that they were just doing a training exercise and had no plans to invade. Yeh, right.

Yeah I don’t know how much of a new offensive the Russians have in them. They took lots of land and lost lots of land, on top of losing lots of equipment and paper soldiers.

The Russians don’t have much left in terms of troops and the Ukrainians have some bad ass veterans now and western backing. I think the Russians are more concerned with lifting economic sanctions.

Those comments are not necessarily at odds with what I said.

His troops are pretty well spent, and worse yet, is that the replacements are not a solution for that - just more dead Russians.

And yes, he wants the sanctions removed.

So troops are not the answer for him yet he needs to keep up the pressure somehow. To me, that just means that he might agree to certain ceasefires or withdrawals on the ground because nothing on the ground is working- but compensate for it with hellish month after month of missiles. The Ukrainians/west need to have a plan as to how they are going to punish them for doing that.

Short to medium term is will continue to be hell for the Ukrainians as the freeze in the dark as the missile rain in. Longer term, Putin needs to watch his arse. He is already accepting the fact that the troops are not working. At some point he will have to accept the fact that his missiles are limited and that-ideally- he is being countered with more and more western missiles. Then what? That's when the for-real negotiations begin.

China can speed that timetable up a bit if Putin misbehaves in a way that reflects poorly on China. Iran also fears even more sanctions as they see Putin struggling. That was a sign of weakness the other day when Iran said it did in fact send missiles to Russia but it was before the Ukraine war. They were obviously filled with fear when they felt the need to say that. Otherwise they would be bragging up how it is something they did for their buddy Vlad.

I am hopelessly late to this comment, but that weapon demo was unimpressive, and downright embarrassing. The cannon couldn't hit the target after three tries. How many thousands of tax collars went to waste there? Can't people fucking aim? Don't "sweep" a singular target. You use your sights, and use a short burst and take out the target. We're falling back to the inefficiency of WWII where we just carpet bombed.

We don't need to do that anymore! WTF!

If it were a system test then it is tested as reality, send a warning first to a pint sized adversary.
Not like US cops, who shoot to kill when someone is holding a broom, kill first, question later.
