We’ll see what the Russians have left in the tank. They definitely talked themselves into a hardline on Crimea and the Ukrainians know damn well what they just did.
On a side note, the whole eastern Ukraine is lost. It has to become a no mans land for both sides or the fighting will never stop. The Russians cannot stay and they won’t let the Ukrainians live in peace. Total loss.
The Russians are quite up for an extended standstill in the east- they were already at war in the east with Ukraine - on a smaller scale- for eight years and they would be fine with the same on a larger scale......except this time around, there are sanctions and Putin does care about them....and he has the pesky little problem of how to get the sanctions lifted if he is still actively killing Ukrainians and has not paid up his reparations- as if that is ever going to happen.
But he has a plan, which is to watch the west fold or weaken its position and go in different directions in regard to the sanctions. Of course that does not have to happen but he has good reason to believe that they will given the nature of the parties involved- so it would be up to the west to prove him wrong. The original point being that -unlike before- a standoff-standstill in the east for years will still work hard against Russia if the sanctions are kept in place or enhanced.
