Russia can only exist as Russia under dictatorship. They tried democracy, it wasn't for them. The country would fragment into several without an iron hand*.
Ukraine being smaller could slowly and painfully become a functioning parliamentary democracy with a bunch of parties. As Poland has been turning into a recognisable, less fucked up developed nation thanks to returning emigrants who went to Western Europe, Ukraine was getting the knock-on effect of higher expectation of institutions.
But it's at a pace that does not work with the US' political bipolar disorder.
*I see similarities to Iraq being bad under Saddam but was for a long time worse for many without his terror. Putin, or a Putin is somewhat like this? Maybe Russia need to be in smaller nation units to actually flourish. I'm saying that in a neutral way, not hehe the Chinese will then eat them way.
