I don't find it astonishing because it has repeated before. Once the people realize they can vote themselves bread and circuses its pretty close to being endgame.America was founded upon this principle.
Unfortunately we've morphed into, "we (politicos) will kiss your ass for your vote... so that you will have given us (elites) the power to control your life."
(It's astonishing to me how people will give up the "promise of America" for a little bit of "free lunch".)
