Rumsey and others looking at charges of war crimes

Quote from AAAintheBeltway:

"Universal jurisdiction" is not accepted by the courts of this country. They would not extradict a defendant to face charges brought on such a basis. Of course, if the Germans were able to arrest Rumsfeld or other officials, then they could exert jurisdiction, much as was done with Pinochet when a craven British government detained the liberator of Chile. Most likely, there would be severe diplomatic repurcusions if Germany purported to try US officials. This type of insult is another good example of why the US should be vigilant to protect our sovereignty and reject supranational power grabs like the International Criminal Court.

It would be more for show if nothing else. Of course universal jurisdiction is not accepted by our courts. I don't even know how Germany has the gall to act as if they can carry out their judgments in this capacity anyways.

I love this Times headline:

Why Rumsfeld Can Rest Easy Over German Charges

Hilarious. I guess a lot of people just scan headlines when they buy the newspaper.

Rumsfeld really dodged a bullet here. I'm glad he can rest easy now. I mean look at what would happen (bottom of 1st paragraph):

"In theory the prosecutor could find him guilty of torture and put him in custody if he visited," says Zimmermann. "But in reality nothing is going to happen."

I actually wish they would indict and try him. Find him guilty too. Maybe prosecute Bush for contributing to global warming as well.

Demonstrate to people why we should not join any of these mulitnational power grabs and get some momentum to withdraw from the ones we have foolishly acceded to, like the WTO.

The only problem with that is that partisanship and ignorance trump logic. People who hate Bush, would accept the idea with vengence without looking at the long term consequences of their actions. Most of them want these things anyways. Another major segment of the population is ignorant to the ramifications of it. They would see Rumsfeld indicted and figure he must be wrong without thinking it through any further.
